I'm pretty sure "Hillside Whitetails" was my very first deer painting. I was still in the early stages of my wildlife career, and there were many species I had not painted. With good reference material, I can paint anything. But a good understanding of the bird or animal is important to be a good wildlife artist. I think the best authorities of whitetail deer would be hunters. As most of the big game paintings are bought by hunters, you have to know your anatomy. Too many inexperienced artists make a deer or elk too heavy in the body. Through observation and experience comes a better understanding of the way a wild animal must look. |
